2012 Salisbury Sculpture Show - Part 1 of ...

When I decided to start taking more of an interest in my own hometown, I discovered that there are lots of things that have been going on for years and I didn't know.  Some pretty cool artsy things, I might add.

This year marks the Fourth year (yep, I missed the first three) for the Salisbury Sculpture Show.  Apparently, Salisbury (the town I've lived in for 40+ years) has been awakening the artist in all of us...or at least the artistic eye.  This is exciting news for me!  I love sculptures...I think.  I figure that if I'm going to start this journey of discovering everything about where I live (it's about time), this is a perfect opportunity to get out there and do just that.  So...here I go.  I'm starting with one of the men that apparently spearheaded all of this.

"Jim Gallucci, a graduate of LeMoyne College (BA, English 1973) and Syracuse University (BFA, Art 1974 and MFA, Sculpture 1976), has been a sculptor for over 30 years. He has worked as an art instructor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the University of Alabama at Huntsville. He was also an Exhibit Designer for the North Carolina Zoological Park in Asheboro, NC.

Presently, Jim works full time designing and fabricating sculpture in his Greensboro studio assisted by a staff of 6. Most of the works are commissions for public, corporate, and residential spaces around the country. For six years he showed sculpture at the Pier Walk Sculpture Show in Chicago, IL. This annual show takes place on the Navy Pier and is the world’s largest outdoor sculpture show. Over 8.2 million people walk through the venue. Jim has also been selected for such international shows as the World Expo 88 in Brisbane, Australia and the 7th Henry Moore Grand Prize Exhibition at the Utsukushi-ga-hara Open-Air Museum, Hakone, Japan and UBE Japan. In 2007 Jim earned a Diploma of Nomination from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Jim’s most recent sculptures have utilized the element of doors and gateways. He says that, “gates have been found through...(visit his website for the rest of the story)"

Gallucci provided two offerings for this years show.  Both are quite lovely.

"Cotton Column" is located at the Trolly Barn off of Liberty Street.

"Cotton Column"

His second is located at St. John's Lutheran Church in the Corner Park and is entitled "Oak Leaf Horizon".  It's right at the corner of West Innes Street and Fulton Street.  I simply adore this one, but need to get a better picture of it.

"Oak Leaf Horizon"

After a day of walking all over the downtown area trying to find these things, I realized that I like doing this.  It's giving me a chance to get to know Salisbury better, it's good exercise, I'm meeting some new people (parole officers count too) and I'm having fun.  I also realized that I need to take more pictures so I can get these wonderful pieces to show their many different sides.

Alrighty...I will be posting the rest over the next several weeks.  I'm pretty into looking up the artists and sharing links to their websites, facebook pages, etc. I think everyone should know the people that created such wonderful gifts for our little Southern town.  I hope you enjoy them, but I hope you'll go out and see them in person too.

I Found a Carolina Lily...

Twenty minutes from my humble abode, there lies a land with beautiful flowers, fancy wares, lovely souls...and boxwood.

Today I took my Mom out on a wonderful adventure. Ever since I found Carolina Lily's facebook page, I've been saying we're going. However, life, work and Renaissance Festivals always managed to get in the way. I've been intrigued by their advertisement for Picnic-in-a-Pot, Tea Party-in-a-Hat, and Boxed Lunch.

If you've never been, allow me to enlighten you. As you can see by the above picture, the grounds (and the house) are magnificent. Ken Carlton Road is located off of Long Ferry Road, in Salisbury, out towards High Rock Lake.

Besides the beautifully landscaped ground (complete with coy pond), there are two cottages where you'll find some of the most delightful items possible. We saw really cool umbrellas, jewelry, soaps, lotions, scarves, hats, gloves, boas, chai tea mix, bird feeders, bird houses and so much more. Let me let the pictures speak for themselves.

So many colors...so many shiny things...so much yummy smelling soaps...cute gifts for kids & adults.
I highly recommend checking Carolina Lily out.

Later this year I'll be trying out one of those Tea Parties and/or Box Lunches and you'll all be able to go along with me. For now...enjoy the rest of my pictures on my facebook page.

Carolina Lily is located at 1375 Kern Carlton Road, Salisbury, NC and they are open Wednesday thru Saturday 10:00am to 5:00pm (closed in January).

Rough Day at the Office of Life

This being social stuff is hard.
This being understanding stuff is even harder.
This accepting stuff is full of crap.
This leaving things alone and letting things turn out how they should is stupid.
I'm not a passive person.
I like knowing where I stand...feeling needed...feeling loved (or at least cared about)...and I need to be a part of something/someones (yes, I meant to put an "s" in there). Waiting patiently on the sidelines while others drift away and expecting them to come back if I'M worthy isn't going to happen. I. AM. WORTHY.
No one...and I mean NO ONE...gets to put me on a shelf expecting me to be there when they decide to come back either.
Yes, sometimes I suck as a friend,
Sometimes I'm a total bitch
Sometimes I'm not worth the time wasted on a phone call
but here's a flash...SOMETIMES THE SAME IS TRUE OF EVERYONE ELSE TOO.

Okay...I feel better now.

Dizzy, But Hardly a Blonde

Today has been a very dizzy day.  I'm pretty sure it has to do with my sinuses...and the antibiotics I'm taking too.  At any rate, it's annoying.  I have things to do and dizzy isn't one of them.

My only rant for the day...

Friend or Foe...

I don't think I'll ever truly be able to grasp the whole not liking someone but including them in many of your social gatherings. Yeah, yeah...I know about the "keeping your enemies closer" stuff, but honestly...is that fair to the person at all?  What happens when this poor soul, that you profess NOT to like, finds out that you really don't?  Isn't it kinder not to include them in things which, in turn, makes them think that you do like them?  I'm not saying you need to be mean to them, but why would you (essentially) lie to them?

Apparently, I'm the odd man out on this issue.  I'm discovering that many of the people I know find this type of behavior acceptable.  I suppose my real question is...how do they really feel about me?

As for me...it just seems kinder to NOT hang out with someone I'm not particularly fond of.
